I know there are some folks here trying to learn FreeBasic. Some time ago I started writing a book on FreeBasic called FBeginner: A Beginner's Guide to FreeBasic. I couldn't keep up with the changes to the compiler so I turned what I had over to the community and sir_mud picked it up and has continued on with the book. I do not really know the current state of the book, but you can get a preview version at his site:

Note: This has been discontinued, but the partial book can be found here.

I never knew that this project existed.. Why did you turn it over to someone else Rick? I don't think you'd get rich off of such a specialised book but you may make a few quid and it will help a lot of people.

Have some Karma man.

Thanks man. It was becoming increasingly difficult to keep track of the compiler changes and writing a book is hard enough without the target moving. Since I started it as a community project I decided to release it to the community as a token of goodwill. (Although on the FB forums I seems to be a bit reviled because of my association with certain ex-members. :) )

I am not sure what has become of the book though. What you see in the preview is the writing I managed to complete on the book, with the exception of the license stuff. I don't visit the FB forums much anymore so I haven't been keeping track.

The other reason I released the project to the community was to free up some time for my fiction writing. I am working on an anthology and novel at the moment.

I like tech writing though, so I am currently working on a new tech book that will cover game design and game mechanics. The first half of the book covers game design, action plans, project management, that sort of thing. The second half will cover game mechanics such as path finding, AI techniques and stuff like that. This will be a generalized book (ie., not targeted to a particular language) which should appeal to a wider audience.

Anyway, thanks for the kind words. You might want to check the FB forums on the status of the book.

Cheers Rick and good luck with the writing.. I go to the FB forums occasionally but this place takes up a lot of my time, not to mention other programming commitments that I have.. I hadn't noticed the book over there before. Unfortunately there is a small element of nastieness on that community, though it's nothing as bad as I've seen in some other places. Anyway, I think everyone around here is happy that you are here.

Thanks! I am probably exaggerating the situation. I am sure most people don't know or care who I am over there. lol.

I too am glad to be here. This is a great place with great people.
