At the moment, there are three main things that gel this community together as far as I can tell. They are;

1: The strong community spirit, everyone gets on really well here.

2: The competitions and challenges (coding and arcade).

3: The knowledge base.

This makes the place a little bit special, there is no other place I know that has the same feel as here, there are a lot of people here who are lone coders, some are in scene groups too, we code using a huge selection of languages, we have users of all levels of ability from professional to complete novices.

I had a thought today about opening another category here.. Requests.

The way it could work is that people could request the help of a coder here to work on a project. There would obviously need to be some strict rules on this to stop the coders getting pissed off by people with shitty requests, so maybe we could insist on having gfx / music BEFORE we start work etc..

If there is enough interest I will have a chat to the admin team about it to see how we can impliment something... It was just the name "Dark Bit Factory" made me think of a demo production line and there must be dozens of gfxers and musicians without groups who want to release something into a party somewhere..

Your thoughts are welcome!

"Here is my idea - make me game" How many times have you seen that on game forums ? lol  Just a reminder that the peeps who want to put their name on something they have had absoultly no input in are out there waiting to pounce on unsuspecting coders etc.

Having said that, i'm looking for coders to impliment my wonderful ideas, musician to make me a cool tune, and graphician to pixel me a killer logo. Of course you will receive credits in MY demo.  :2funny:

I always look at the dark side :) Good luck with it mate.

Basically, I like the idea. I thinking creating a platform for people to get
together and work an a certain project in a team is always a good intention. This
board would be a good platform indeed. I think the entries of the competitions
show how much creativity is in the community of this board.

Nevertheless, I guess sooner or later there are some ppl asking for help or who
want to start a big project without having enough skills or/and experience. But
I guess that is the way it is - everyone has to learn out of things like these.

I guess we all have dozens of unfinished projects on our HD. And maybe someone
has already made bad experience with an internet formed project. But that's the
way it is. If you start putting your energy into something you have to be careful
and check out - if it is worth it.

That's the same in industry. Lots of money and time is spent before the actual
project starts for investigating the risks of the project. That includes checking
if the project team has enough skills and references.

So, I think it's worth trying ... if we agree on opening such board - it would be
important to advertise the board on other gfx and music boards ...

Btw ... how many ppl would be interested in working on a demo/game with some
musicians and gfxians ? Guess the majority of this board would take the coding
part, eh ???

Again ... just my 2cents  ::)

I like it.  It might just open up some oportunities....  Sure there may be some dodgey requests, but that's no different to any other area of life.

Bring it on shockwave.

It sounds like a good idea. You might give it a trial run and see how it goes. You can always shelve the idea if it doesn't pan out.

Positive so far then..

We'd need to develop a set of strong guidelines about how people should submit requests for coders to protect you guys from getting messed around before it gets launched, if it does. It would be a great way for us to get our stuff used though, let's face it, we're up to our ears in coders, but there aren't many gfxers and musicians among us which is one reason why we have only seen a few demo groups spring from here up until now.

I think the idea is good myself. It says to me, "This forum is like a huge demogroup" because that's what it would seem like to me, which is of course a good thing (Haujobb has over 40 members, you know!).

I say go for it.

It might be a good idea to allow people to add material (sprites / 3D models / fonts / music etc) to a files section that are donated to futer projects people might find the tune they need or at least get them some way into the project. Of course the creator of the material should be held under no obligation to take part in the project. And the persons borrowing the material should be allowed to modify it as appropriate to suit the project

Great idea! I know the problem, the requesters must have some concept gfx/code/msx when asking for collaboration. But the community will benefit from that. Looking forward..

I was thinking about something else. I remember once someone asked that on Pouet. Maybe as a future compo or something too. To make a megademo where everyone connect his own part in a big demo, just like the old CPC/AtariST/and other collabarations where there was a menu or nothing and separate screens from various coders around the scene, like a big megademo of the dbf forums now. That would rock! What do you think?

Optimus
p.s. I'd love to take part in such a scene project!

Yup - I really do start to love this idea more and more ...

That's an interesting idea - guess that could be a nice and interesing experience. All you need
would be a good framework or plugin system ( e.g. look at visual plugins WinAMP have ).
Could turn out very inspiring ...

Wow, what a cool place :)

I'd love to have a demo that was a collaberation here some time, it would depend a lot on getting some people who were all using the same language. It could work.

Anyway, it looks like the idea of us doing requests seems popular so it's time to get the thinking caps on of how to launch it so it works..

how about a joint effort at a demo a dbf demo that all the members can have a say in with all the effects then even if some of the members dont understand how the code works the could give input on how the effects should look?
