ljs space adventures
« on: April 14, 2007 »
heres a test level from a game im making in freebasic/opengl/sdl.

iveput this up cause i really need feedback on how it runs on your systems it should hopfully run around 63fps clamped and it should vsync for some reason i cant get a proper vsync on this laptop bad gl drivers i suspect!

i also need feed back on what you guys think of the test level does the ship move around ok and what would yous like to see in the finished product.

http://www.4shared.com/file/14043329/c786cba9/LjAdv.html

the overall plan is to have around 15 multi part levels with around five diffrent types of badguys all with there own attributes.

<edit forgot to say you can shoot with the z key move up down left right with the arrows>

Engine looks cool. Nice ship model and plant graphic. All runs smooth here ...

You ship doesnt seem to be able to make a looping - is it right ? Anyway - the game looks like it
could be like a lot of fun arcade/space shooter. This definately depends on the actual fight versus
the enemy ships and their AI.

Don't forget the right keyboard mapping for qwertz countries ;)

Good sync, the game ran very smooth here with no glitches at all, the particle routine looks very capable of producing some nice results too, I agree with Benny about the movement of the ship, it seems a bit restrictive that you can't roll 360 degrees or loop the loop! Adding these would certainly help the game.

I tend to favour controls where the Y movement keys are reversed, ie. press up to put nose down, down for nose up, this is because I played a lot of flight sims on the Amiga probably.. Some people prefer it the way you have it, so an option to switch would be great.

It needs some sort of map too, something similar to the map in Elite would work well with this type of game.

The thing that really niggled me was the exhaust particles, they look wrong and just seem to float around, you'd be better either losing them completely or speedint them up 10 times as fast,  they destroy the perception of speed at the moment and are too dense, same with the shot when you fire it, it's completely over the top :D Normally a good thing, but maybe in this case better to be confined to when you hit something?

All in all, looks promising :)

works fine, I also think looping would be a good idea, stable 63 fps :)

changed the way the emmiters work definitly a good idea!

now theres a bit of a problem with no restrictions on the spaceship tilt as the game doesnt move on a z axis if the ship loops round so it faces the screen when you shoot it fires out the back and there would be no point rotating the bullet, so mabey gonna have to restrict the up and down roll although i could alow for a bit more the left and right clamping can go though. ill try it out and see what you guys think.

@benny theres gonna be a key config option in the game so you should be sorted ;)

The particles definately look loads better, but the control system is not there yet.. It seems a little sluggish. The projectile looks cooler now too :)

Very cool indeed Nino.

I was thinking that would you see stars infront of the planet?
Also, it might be quite cool to have the ship straighten up if no player movement is made after a period of time.
Oh, and I didnt hear any music / sfx.

right no probs guys.

@clyde this is just a test mate so ive not fully sorted the stars or music out yet but cheers.

@shockwave do you think it just needs to be more responsive cause that isnt a problem, or does it need something extra, its really hard getting this sort of thing right especially when it doesnt run right here its very stuttery.

< I forgot to say if you guys are wondering what the games all about check the storyline folder out its got level 1 and 2, the whole game came from an episode of the chappele show based on charlie murphay mickey free and prince me and my cousin has mixed mr t and lil lon in mix also>

Here is the error -
"This application has failed to start because SDL.DLL was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem"
The .rar has only one file which is an exe

The original post has all the media in it Rain Storm, you need to download that first and then replace the exe in the zip with the ones he's attaching to the posts.

I got it so thats why. I like the graphics I will check out the updates now

edit-

I think you need to reduce roll pitch and yaw whenever the keys are not pressed to bring the ship to a foward motion instead of making those adjustments manually. it might improve the feel of the handling by creating a bit of resistence to the change in motion I know it is in space and all but plane like effects will be more intuitive to the player who will prabably assume that just a touch to the left and the craft will point only a little to the left instead of veering left until told otherwise

what does every one else think i personally like the way it is now with the adjustments having to be made manually i think it might add a little something when the badguy ships are shooting at you and your trying to shoot them back, but i know some people would like the ship to auto correct itsself so mabey an option for this so it caters for both?

An option would be perfect. How wide is the turning arc? The ship takes a long time to do a loopdy loop
