Taking our resources druid! What resources?
I doubt that any alien life that's developed the means to visit us would find anything on earth particularly interesting unless there's some alien equivalent of David Attenborough.
Hmmm. History shows that our earthly civilisations always take resources when visiting others. The Romans are a good example. They visit and take... art, buildings, monuments, slaves, gold, food. OK same level of advancement arguably but it shows *why* civilisations travel.
If on the other hand you want to argue that an "advanced" civilisation would never need our resources (they must have had resources to get here), I'd ask, who funded their journey? Why? To say "hello"? Maybe their equivalent of oil is running out? They seek somewhere else to live? They need water? That they have resources to get here does not mean that they always will or that they dont have secondary resource issues (slaves to dig out more of the reosurces for example).
Also, what evidence is there that a more advanced society behaves better when it comes to resources. Don't we take the rainforest from less advanced societies? Don't we kill millions to get control of oil? I'm sure many natives living in villages may see us as savages in the way we act, even though we are more advanced. Perhaps the same will be true of our first visitors? Perhaps we will think them savage as they destroy our lives and land.
Lastly, why assume the good guys got to us first? Every society has bad and good elements. Whats to say the first arrivals wont be an utterly nasty bunch?
No, I'm with Druid on this. The Universe is likely to be a very brutal, scary, place and as the young kids in the school, we are likely to take a few beatings before we graduate.
