Fps and specs please :) Fire test.
« on: June 17, 2006 »
Here's a preview of a fire technique I am working on, I need some feedback with fps readings and your specs please :)

Thanks.

Hmm, cheers Stonemonkey. A little slower than I'd have hoped.

Thanks Clyde.
This is the trouble with writing stuff with tinyptc, it struggles on some systems.
I'm honestly torn whether to carry on with this or to do something in GL instead.
I'll wait and see what other fps readings come in.

Cheers Optimus.
I'm thinking of having a burning vector scroll if I can get it fast enough.

Yeah, that could work Clyde but I really want to keep the resolution as it is. I think I'll havew to be a little bit more canny.

Painful as this is, I think that the best way of getting a better frame rate will be for me to ditch the warping of the flames which means that I'll be able to make this routine viable for a demo.
I'll be releasing the full source code for this effect once I've got the demo coded.

I guess that it's hard to take a step back and scrap code that has taken a lot of work, but I have to admit that it looks probably a fair bit better without the warping. Oh well :) Thanks for the testing guys, you've saved me some embarrasment from releasing a slow routine.

83-87fps here, 3Ghz P4 Dualcore, 1gig ram, 512meg Radeon X1300 PCI-express (16x)

I think sometimes the pixel pushing is affected by the type and speed of interface between gfx card and motherboard, Maybe everyone can post if there card is PCI,AGP or PCI-E  and the speed of the bus if they know it, would could atleast then see if it is possibly linked to that  ???

One of lifes mysterys for me Jon.
I thought that it was directly related to the processor speed at first, a few tests on several computers gave me some surprising results.
I can say that tinyptc stuff in Freebasic seems to lag on some AMD systems and that the stuff seems to prefer ATI cards but that's not 100% accurate.
I was getting about the same results as you from this program.

Anyway, I've ditched the warp map and managed to increase it to about 125 fps, though I am sure that it will take a big hit on some systems. I'll need to be careful not to have any scrollers in this intro because they'll surely judder and I'll have to choose what I burn carefully unless I want to run this in 320 X 240 which would kind of defeat the object of using Freebasic because Thygrion and I already released an intro in Blitz  in this res.

Personally I think it's very cool indeed.
