PROCEDURAL CHALLENGE!

Welcome to the Procedural GFX challenge!
Yes, it's time to look up those fractal bookmarks once more and dust off those pixel shaders because it's time to create something purely out of code!

[What we would like you to make:]

Procedural graphics can be any kind of texture, effect, fractal or image that you generate within your program.. You might make a beautifully coloured mandelbrot, a fully 3D menger sponge, a stunningly animated Julia set, maybe even you can make an ultra realistic picture or texture? :) Possibly you'll make something out of voxels?

Maybe you'll even go down the oldschool route and create a mindblowing plasma! Possibly you'll use particles of some kind to simulate fire or smoke or water or cloth or clouds, or anything!

This challenge is so open! It should give a lot of variety!

Here are the rules!

  • You may only include a font, not other gfx are to be included.
  • Your effect must be completely generated with your code.
  • Previously released works are not allowed.
  • You may submit entries in the following formats:
  • win32exe - dos - yabasic - amiga (as long as it runs on winuae) - atari st (as long as it runs on saint) - any format that runs on vice.
  • You may enter as many times as you like.
  • You may include sound in your entries.
  • You MUST include a screenshot in your entry!
  • This competition is only open to members of this forum.
  • Please post your entries with the word [PROCEDURAL] in the title.
  • Entries may be posted between NOW and Midnight of [15th MAY 2008]
  • The winner [S?] will be decided by a poll of forum users
  • If ripped media is used, please get permission if possible and at least credit the artist/musician.

Here are the prizes!

  • 1st Place - Amazon voucher for £25 - Sig - 25 Karma
  • 2nd Place - Sig - 15 Karma
  • 3rd Place -  Sig - 10 Karma
  • All entries get 2 Karma

Good Luck!

I've been working with mazes lately and would like to use the algorithm in a new way. Is it acceptable if I have already learned the algorithm but write code from scratch?

So it can be a still image but also an animated effect or a 3d scene with generated texture/models, as long as no additional data files are used for gfx/models/etc?

That's very interesting. I am definitelly bringing something..

even i am sadly very busy atm, due fact of some private things, i will try to enter something small and simple too ;)

Btw, what about the sourcecode? So ppl can see, if there is real generated stuff or still something "hidden" (like image in own format) included? (the think is, Blitz generates big executables afaik and so its not really easy to check if there is pure code only or still some hidden included data ^^

Source code is of course always welcome, but people should not be forced to give it if they don't want.

It is certainly possible to "reverse" a blitz exe to extract any packed in gfx, I know this because I've done it. Although I cant ever recall anybody cheating in one of our challenges.

If that started happening I would stop running them.

Anyway I do hope you manage to have a go at entering, competition for this one will be fierce so to win will take some doing! Good luck.

You may include sound in your entries.

Is it allowed to use and play XM, MOD modules or is it only allowed to play generated sound/music? (and what about V2m tunes, using the synth by KB?) thanks.

Hotshot,

Why not make a nice plasma? That would be acceptable.

Vain,

This is a procedureal graphics competition, so therefore the graphics are the things that need to be generated.

You are allowed to include a song, be it generated or xm, or whatever as long as the graphics are generated within your program.

Hope that clarifies.

These were some really awesome entries and it was very hard to pick just three for the voting.

Its great to see such variety in approaches and languages used.

Very Inspiring.
