The next challenge.
« on: November 04, 2008 »
As many of you know, the challenges have offered a small cash prize for a long time.

Actually, several people who have won the challenges have been reluctant to take the prize money on offer, but here's the deal now.

Because of my work situation I really have to look after my pennies, the forum is fine, hosting is paid up until the middle of next year and the domain name is owned outright for about the next 8 years.

So, after this remakes voting I still want to be able to run the challenges, only in the future they will be for honour only, until my work situation is resolved.

I don't want to stop the challenges, especially as the idea for the next one is maybe the best ever... Hope you understand guys. Thanks.

That's perfectly understandable mate. I think most of the guys here do it for the kudos anyway. I am looking forward to seeing what the next challenge will be as I hope to participate this time.  8)

And I hope the job situation gets resolved for you soon matey.

Agreed.  Hopefully your upcoming work opportunities will give you some breathing room anyway.

I was coding for fun before the prizes were available, and I'll continue to code for fun even if they aren't available.

one should consider the challenges here as something for the mind. If you want to "gamble" your prods for money, I think the stock market is a better place! No need to weigh on Shockwave's purse.

I did not enter many of the challenges here, but the one I entered was only for pure fun and to challenge my mind
We once had a passion
It all seemed so right
So young and so eager
No end in sight
But now we are prisoners
In our own hearts
Nothing seems real
It's all torn apart

One worry when offering a real world prize to a challenge is that there is a temptation to increase the value of this prize to entice more people to enter as well as feeling obliged to offer such rewards.

Some people may only enter a competition/challenge if there is a real world prize, but I doubt if the lack of such a prize would deter anyone on these forums from entering.

The signatures, kudos, general appreciation and respect that both entrants and winners get is a longer term, visible (and more valuable) reward that is impossible to buy with money.

I never participated, but as much people already said, the pleasure of watching all entries, playing with mind, learn new stuff, winning a signature, and/or karma are way sufficient I guess :)

'hope you'll find what you are looking for shocky !

For me creating a production is all about being a fun hobby, and same applies to me about entering a competition ( if real life permits ). It's a bonus if there's an award on offer, whatever shape or form it is. Very much the same thing about a bonus if someone else likes your work.

I have had fun watching the entries and example entries to the compo, as basically I have never seen the original cracktros.

And Im looking forward to hearing in the future about the next challenges.

Definately. What the other says. This forum and its competitions
don't need a cash prize. Its fun to compete with other creative
minds and develop some nice effects within the rules.

Looking forward for the next comp.

It's not about the prize (even though a little extra cash is always welcome :skint: ), but it's about the taking part, and possibly learning something along the way from the other entries.

Money always ruins everything good. People can't be bought to make art. Kompos will be better without money/hardware/whatever burden in everybody's mind. If you participate because of the cash, then you are coding for the wrong reasons anyway.
