SMf 2.0 RC 2 is out
« on: November 09, 2009 »
I'll be upgrading the forum in the next couple of days, hopefully it will fix the bugs!

We may have to get rid of this theme if it's not supported by 2.0 though.

Ahh, I've just done some reading about this and I've decided to wait a while, it's likely going to break a lot of things so I'm going to wait until it's been tested by other people first... Yes I have chickened out this time...

Thing is that it's going to trash this theme, I don't mind that so much, I could find another but we'll be in the same boat when the next big upgrade happens..

Thinking of going back to the default theme anyway, it will make it much safer in the future, I am open to suggestions and comments!

Uhh ... yup. I would also be careful when upgrading. Nevertheless, guess
it's worth it. Is there somewhere a list with new features (next to bugfixes)
which come with the new version?

Regarding the theme ... well I do not know how the Template engine works
in SMF - can you simply change it somewhere and give it a try.

In general, I am quite pleased with this theme I have to admit!

A 2 minute look through the SMF php code is enough to tell you it's not written very well (sql scattered everywhere for a start) so you need to stay pretty much right up-to-date to avoid being hacked off the web.  But 2.0 is still beta/rc so it's probably worth waiting to see if the final release is coming real soon.

I guess there are a lot of old PHP opensource projects on the net with
terrible code (terrible, if you look at it today). Guess that is because
they started with PHP4 (or earlier) where a lot of design concepts were
not supported (true OO, Prepared SQL statements, unit tests etc)

Maybe they will rewrite the core some day ?

I wonder if it'll be worth looking into creating your own DBF Theme.

Either way, hope the transition goes well.
Clyde.

I wonder if it'll be worth looking into creating your own DBF Theme.

It's an interesting thought but I don't have either the time or the expertise to do it, there are tutorials over at the SMF forums if you fancy a try at it yourself but it's not for the faint hearted.
