Hi guys!

Presenting to you today: "Audible - A Trip To The Past"

It's sort of a retro music disk thingamajig. Better have a look yourself...   :D

All tracks are from the Atari ST by Mad Max (Jochen Hippel). Originally they were composed on the C64 by "The Master" Rob Hubbard.
Usage should be self explanatory, but if you're easily confoozled, have a look in the info.txt provided in the zip file first.  ;)

you might want to look into a small bug with selecting the next song.

Thx mate! I'd fix it, but it's kinda hard to look into a small bug (what's exactly not working? :() on a system I don't have access to... ;) Maybe it's a 32/64 bit prob.

Nice one. I am a sucker for oldschool music "discs". Good selection of
tunes, too.

The music-rotation-menu looks really new-schoolish (Apple like) though ;-)

Some bugs on WindowsXP, too. It does not happen always but very often (like 90%) when switching tunes or when clicking fast on the current song again and again.

Some more improvement suggestions:

- Sinescrolling top logo
- Songtexts should scroll - maybe with some additional credits/infos on the tune
- Variation of the vumeters
- Picture of the Game/Music which are in the background could look better when they are faded out a bit more

Just my 2 cents. Nevertheless, well done, Padman  :clap:

Additional info on the crashing bug when switching tunes:

Is modname: "unknown" really a valid module name? Maybe there are states within
the menu selection, when no song is selected but it tries to play it anyway (just guessing)  ???

Thanks man! Yeah I know there could be some improvements. This was put together rather quickly. Expect more for Volume 2! (if there ever is one ;))

For the bugs: I really hate coding sometimes. I'm on XP too and it does not crash. Well, it crashed once or twice during development. But not 90% of the time. (Btw, why would one click on the same song over and over again  ::)  :D) But I'll look into it again. I guess it has to do with the included DLL of Slippy's OSME and the way music is stopped/switched/started. Windows says it's in module unknown. See, even Windows has no clue! hehe Anyway, thx for the feedback!  :)

Fair enough. This sucks.  :( Promise, I'll look into it! Though I tried to reproduce the error and clicked on one song over and over again like a Berserker, but I couldn't make it crash. *shrugging shoulders* Probably your computers are too modern and fast. They just don't take their time to switch songs properly... ;D


EDIT: exe updated. (in main post). Please tell me if it's fixed or at least better.

People click everywhere (lessons learned from user-tests we ran at our company)  -
a lot of people also seems to double click everything (as they would double click icons
on Windows) ;-)

Woohoo it's fixed.  :clap:

Well, the solution was quite easy. Somehow the delay between Stop/Init/Play was too short. I don't know how the OSME dll handles these things internally, but obviously it tried to play the new song, when the init of it wasn't completely finished. On my old computer (which takes its time anyway) it didn't matter. But you guys probably got faster cpus so it got messed up. Anyway, glad this easy fix worked (so far).

For the clicking. Yeah,  I should have known... My gf clicks on everything a hundred times, if it doesn't respond immediately... But, well... :D

This is super mate :)
I like the tune, and the musicdisk is nice :)
I was a bit annoyed that my mouse was captured, until I noticed the title :p
I am just a bit disappointed about the channel analyser (always at max in One man and his droid)... and repeted along the bar (that make it a bit boring to me)
Oh, and ... why only three channels ? normally .mod have 4 channels ?

Which programming language did you use ? Which graphic / sound API ?
But anyway, nice little musicdisk :)

I know it's crap, that it's sometimes mostly at max. (If you look closely it's moving a little though :P) But Slippy's OSME dll puts out only the max volume that is used on each channel. (From 0 to 16) And in the case of One Man and his Droid the values are obviously always at a high level. And that it's a little boring. Well, point taken.

Because it's chip music from the Atari ST and the YM chip only has 3 channels.

All songs were originally composed by Rob Hubbard on the C64. These are all cover versions by Mad Max on the Atari ST as stated in the main post. Btw, the covers are also from the C64 , since some of the games where never published on the ST.  ;)

I saw the analyser moving a bit too :D but moreover, you faded it :p

Some YM song sounds really beautiful ... just with three channels so ... Wow !
I guess in games, when we are seeing analyser with more than three bar ... it's taking into account the instruments and not the channels ... maybe you can do the same ? :D or putting one upside down :D with some masking operation :D (Some ideas for the next prod :p oh ! maybe I should do a prod myself :D)

You're not annoying. Everything's cool...  ;)

Well, with the DLL I used for playback, the only way possible is the way I did it.
On a real ST I have seen better spectrum analyzers with more bars. Dunno how this was done exactly. Some sort of FFT I guess. But now that you mention it, I think I have seen some example once using another DLL for ST music playback  (not SNDH files, but YM files) which had the possibility to get some FFT info. If I find it, I'll make a special version with proper bars just for you.  :P

Dude, no offense, but you completely missed the point. BASS can't replay Atari SNDH files. These files need emulation for playback. Maybe you should take a look at http://sndh.atari.org/. And btw: Purebasic supports BASS etc...  :P But we are not talking about MOD/XM/etc. files here.  ;)

Yes, Bass don't play sndh..
But you can use StSound to Play the Orginal YM Files  ;)
So you don't need to include a dll into the Exe

Yeah, I know. I used ST Sound in a couple of prods for RR. But YM is old and doesn't sound as good, because it's just register dumps of the YM registers. SNDH tunes are way better imho. And in addition some songs are just not available in YM format due to format restrictions...
