Working on an Atari ST intro remake
« on: July 08, 2011 »
This week i've been mostly working on a remake from an Atari ST crew - Cynix.
It's not 100% complete yet but close enough to get an idea of what i'm trying to achieve.
Music and gfx ripped directly from the original intro.
Padman, you should recognise this intro being an Atari ST man. ;)

Yup, I know this quite well. So well to spot at first sight, that the gfx in the beginning are not 100% original. Sorry. ;) Well at least not as in the version I know. See attached screenshot. There's too much anti aliasing (and the font's different too). Please correct me if I'm wrong.
It doesn't really matter though, it's always good to see people doing Atari remakes! Let's just call it a 2K11 remix.  So keep it up! A little closer to the original and it could end up on Retro Remakes! :)

Yeah, I used the pixelated gfx first but it looked a bit rough so i decided to smooth them out with my own.  I still have the original gfx so i'll post that version too.

The missing dll will be a DX9 one, D3DX9_43.DLL as i'm using the mp3d library for Purebasic.
I've attached it here for those who don't have it on their systems.   I should have some time on monday to play with the intro a bit more and make it as close to the original as possible.

It's great nice to see another coder interested in remakes,

The music in this one is good too.  Thanks for posting it KrazyK :)

Latest version attached with the original gfx.
Shame the OSME and the YMReplay dll's' aren't smaller as I have the tune as an SNDH and a YM file.  Trouble is that the YM2XM converter doesn't convert them 100% accurately and they sound pretty bad, hence the comparitively large file size using the OSME library.

Just finished another ST remake, this time Automation Menu 286.
Music ripped using ADR ripper through Steem then converted to .snd(h) using sndhconv on ST.
Gfx also ripped directly from the unpacked .prg file then resized for 640,480 window.
It's my first double 48*64 scroller using just PB native commands, no addon, just PB and it appears to have worked out quite well.
I'll post the PB code when I get back off holiday and have tidied it up a bit.

Heh, I really like the grumpy look of the creature. That's why I remade it once too.  :) If it wasn't on Retro Remakes already, I'd upload it!  (with your permission of course) Just one tiny tiny tiny thing: if I remember correctly, the VU bars are behind the scroller in the original...  Anyway, if you want I could add the final version of the Cynix one there. Just let me know & keep them coming! ;)

You're quite right, the vu bars are behind the scrollers on closer inspection.   Not near my pc for a while but will correct it and upload the code at the same time when I get back.    :)   Can you post a link to the other remake ?

Ok, i'm back off holiday now and have updated the code to show the vu bars behind the scrollers, correct scroller speeds for top and bottom, no crashes in windowed mode if using the keyboard or mouse.
It should also (hopefully) now work on Win32 and Win7 x64.  I think it's a pb bug with directx that crashes the 16/32 bit colour depth problem, but with a bit of jiggery pokery I may have fixed it :-\.  Let me know if it fails on anybodys system please?

The scroller sort of stutters in windowed mode for me. It didn't do that in the old version. But all in all it works well (Win XP)! And I love the Automation Packer "emulation" ;)

The Automation one is already available on RR. And for the Cynix one I'm not sure if it's a good idea to add it since a lot of people will have to download an extra DLL to get it working.  :-\
