[MAGNIFICATION] C60
« on: July 23, 2009 »
Here is my entry into the Magnification Challenge. It is a "3D" model of the Buckminsterfullerine molecule, or C60 as it is also known.

I think it may be the deepest magnification yet entered into the competition, which I hope counts for something :)

[edit]
I have put a comma after .:Druid:.'s name, added the .swf file and altered the depth-swapping conditions. The flickering is reduced, but still noticable. If I reduce it too much, depth-swapping will be delayed too much and it will look even stranger.

[edit 2]
Zip file fixed :)

Very nice! I love the scrolltext, too. Informative, and full of bad puns!

Very good work, CK0.

The rotation is just fine - on my PC the balls flickers
from time to time. No idea why.

What flash version did you do it in ? Flash 8 ?

It's Flash 8. The flickering is down to "Heisenberg's uncertainty principle" in the scrolling text, but it's really a small programming bug.

The z-ordering needs a schmidt-trigger sort of calculation, rather than the current one which uses precise values of the Z-axis.
I'll try to fix it tonight.

The text you put raises it above being a vectorbob routine :) Nice one.

Ah, you've seen through my clever use of vector circles with eliptical gradient filling to give the illusion of light-sourced spheres.

This is the funniest scrolltext I read for a decade!
The choice of colors in the gradient almost made me believe it were gouraud-triangles :)
What about an online version?

It can be done - I'll put a Flash Demos section on the Game Builders Club site and make the swf available for download from various places.
