I had hoped to have launched the next challenge by now, we had some really nice entries for the procedural challenge, it was a really good turn out for the summer months when coding acitivites can sometimes take a dip :)

Last year we had a remakes challenge, I had planned the remakes challenge to be next, but since the last remakes challenge a few things changed.

Firstly I bought the domain www.retro-remakes.net and gave it to Stormbringer who has coded and released no less than 43 almost perfect conversions of amiga cracktros to run on the win32 platform. Rbz is also noteworthy having also converted 8 amiga trainer menus, myself I have contributed 8 as well, there are also other members of this community who have contributed.

These remakes are all kept on retro-remakes.net and in the absence of a proper portal I put an smf forum in place like this one as a temporary home for them. I know that there are about 63 remakes there all together at the moment. The plan was to have a proper coded php portal in place in due course, I started to teach myself php and mysql and happily I am fairly comfortable with it, but not as comfortable as Tetra.

Tetra took my design for retro-remakes and he started to build the portal a couple of weeks ago, there is so much going into the portal that it will not be ready for a while.

I want the remakes comp to co-incide with the re-launch of retro-remakes.net (if you had registered at retro-remakes.net, you will not need to re-register for the new site as Tetra has taken the parts of the members database that he needs.. You won't even need to fill in the details of your profile! ;) )

There will be a definate goal to this comp when it is launched, and that will be to get the number of valid remakes much closer to 100 so the rules to this one are likely to be very different to before, be warned! And there's really no point starting to code anything yet as we might well target certain conversions.

The prize for this comp will be more prestigious than usual too.

But anyway, that's why the remakes comp hasn't been launched yet...

The relaunch of the site will happen in an unknown time frame, there are lots of things that combine to affect this like coding time, colours and layout adjustment, testing, graphics, exporting databases etc..

I don't anticipate that it will be huge, huge delays but you never know.

A comp about Something else...

And I feel that even though I am overbusy with some things I would still like to get my hands dirty with some code so I can tell you that I will be launching another challenge today, everyone will be informed about it via the newsletter too.

It will be a mini-challenge if you will.. Anyway I had a nice idea for it and I hope that some of you will be interested in horticulture..

The arcade...

We have recently gathered several new members who seem to enjoy the arcade but don't contribute elsewhere in the forum (I am talking about 0 post accounts), some of these users for some reason have registered multiple accounts here, they have all been identified too. We don't mind you using the arcade, but stick to one account please! If you have a problem logging into your original account, contact an admin, there's a button in the menu bar for it. If you dont like your display name, change it in your profile! There's no need to register another account.

Another thing about the arcade, I have found a few more games, Likely that I will replace some of the ones that are not so good with some new ones and re-set the score tables shortly... This will probably happen at the weekend.

Thanks for reading. Please post any comments below :)

I'm a bit confused by the words "retro" & "remake".
Does "retro" mean cracktros only (since i didn't find anything else there) or conversions of c64/amiga/dos-intros/demos, too ?
Does "remake" include 'porting' (if i can get my hands on the original source code) or 'emulation' (like interpreting parts of the original 68k-code in my own parser) ?

At the moment there are only Amiga crack intros and trainers at retro-remakes, there are plans to "remake" other Amiga intros and demos, for instance I know that Stormbringer is working on Mental Hangover and also the Tristar Boulders intro amongst other things, so certainly, other old fashioned platforms would be welcome.

As far as porting / remaking is concerned, a bit of both goes on. Where you will see porting a lot over at retro-remakes is in exotic music formats like sidmon, suntronic etc.. it's easier to port that code over and emulate it.

There are a lot of people in the scene who really hate the idea of these remakes / ports, but they do require a lot of skill sometimes and provide a look into the past for people who could only otherwise run the originals on emulators. :)
