C++ demo framework and xm audio question
« on: April 10, 2011 »
I'm starting to put together a shell/framework for use with C++ OpenGL demo coding. I plan to use Iq's 64k framework as a base. Do people think this is a good idea? I'm not overly concerned about size at the moment and have no immediate plans to make anything smaller than 64k.

I'm also wondering which would b the best choice for XM playback? I'd like to sync effects with music so it would be nice to have some kind of callback or trigger when a sample is played. I'm assuming this is the most sensible/usual method for syncing? Any hints or pointers (no pun intended) would be greatly appreciated. uFmd and MiniFMod are mentioned a lot on here, so maybe that's a good place to start...

Thanks,

Hello,

I don't know what are you limitations / expectations, but why not use the Farbraush v2 soft synth (to continue in the 64kb style). The problem that I have with it ... it's windows only ... but otherwise ... I have heard it's a good piece of software.
Otherwise, I you really wanted to use XM, uFMOD is good I think.
The demoscene will never die, never!

IQs framework must be a good starting point. I do not know it - but this guy does really awesome stuff.

About XM replay, maybe you can have a look at MiniFMod.

It's not so much of a concern now but probably in a few years:
uFmod is written in 32bit assembly, thus it's impossible to use it in 64bit code.
The amount of asm-code in miniFmod is still somewhere near "reasonably portable".
MiniFmod already includes some provisions to do sample generation or compression.
So it's probably much easier to extend if you ever want to go beyond the xm format.
On the downside it's ~2kb bigger.

I have not looked at Iq's 64k framework, but I have looked over the 1k and 4k frameworks before. It's probably a very good place to start.

As for music format and minifmod, ufmod etc. I would suggest that unless you are trying to create exe's of a given small size to use the one you find easiest to use and implement. If you add the support in a modular fashion you can always replace or swap the music player at a later date should you wish to go for the 64k size limit and squeeze more in.

Thanks guys. I will give MiniFMod a try first as that sounds like the best fit for me at the moment.
