freebasic & visualbasic
« on: December 30, 2008 »
i was wondering if visualbasic has any common things with freebasic.

i'm asking b/c i was downtown yesterday and i found some visualbasic books in greek.

if those two have common things i was thinking to buy a book for visualbasic so i can  easier learn how to code in freebasic b/c the books are in greek and i won't have to struggle with certain words and meanings :)

if it doesn't have anything in common, what other language is closer to freebasic? so i can search for that language book if there are any :)

Not sure how close Freebasic is to VisualBasic, I never used Visualbasic.
I know that Freebasic syntax seems fairly similar to microsoft Quickbasic 45 though.

They are quite similar.  A fair amount of old (up to 2003 <edit>To clarify, VB6 stuff might work, VB.NET stuff won't) VB will work with FB with the right options, as long as it's not too tied to Windows or really old 16bit DOS stuff.  Don't expect that there will be anything in the books that will just run without you putting in some work though.

@jim

thanx man :D

if it's newer than 2005? will that do?

the reason i want the book is b/c it's in my language and it will help me understand many things, that's what i'm hoping for.

if i understand those things then i'll know how to make my own simple stuff :D

@shockwave

did you mean Quickbasic 4.5?

If you are able to find any, QB45 is 21 years old tomorrow!, you might well find that all the demos work in DOS text modes and are hard to translate.

Almost certainly too new.  All VB code written after 2001 is likely to be VB.NET, which is specific to Microsoft compilers, and can't be compiled by the FB compiler.

so it would be best to look for a visualbasic 2000 version or older book

Since you'd be using Microsoft's compiler, no problem getting new books.

are you using fbide? its great for new comers. you can look up commands in the help section while you code and there is loads of example code for you too mess with.

c++ wont help you much but i think knowing c helps a lot with freebasic and a lot of other basic laungages in general. just experiment with lots of different things/have fun. when learning its important too keep a broad mind.

You need to go to a museum to find books on QB, not a bookshop!
