[PERFORMANCE TEST] little e-business card
« on: October 06, 2008 »
Hi,

I created a little e-business card in flash. It uses software
rendering and is of course calculated in realtime (no static
animation). But since current flash version doesnt support
hardware acceleration - I would be happy if you could post
some performance tests (cpu power).

http://www.weltenkonstrukteur.de

The older you comp is the better ;-). Ah ja, and Flash9 is
required.

Thanks in advance.

Is there a way to "read" the speed?
It runs smooth (probably 25fps), but somehow feels like it could be faster.
(Intel Core2 Duo E8400 2x3Ghz, 4GB Ram, Windows XP, Flash 9.0.124)
At some points there are some visible jpeg-artifacts.

Would be nice if the globe could rotated interactively.
Don't know if that's possible, but maybe you could add some "glow" along the edges (like google earth does) to accentuate the effect.
Are you drawing polygons? You might achieve the same with some move-table-based effect (these kinds of things).

Yup. I will try to implement something this evening.

Hmm ... the movement of the earth is rather slow indeed. But whenever
I try it to be faster - I thought it is too irritating. Especially if you go over
the logo - my address appears. And if the world is turning too fast I thougt
it would be too irritating.

True. Well spotted. Have to rework the map.

Possible. Will import it for testing tonight.

Don't know if that's possible, but maybe you could add some "glow" along the edges

Might needed some work on the earthmap.jpg. Hmm .. I am not an artist, but I
like the idea. I will think about it. Thanks

Yup. Drawing polys atm. I will have a search on that "move-table-based fx".

Run smooth for me too :)

I also noticed the jpeg artifacts, and something else :

When your address/contact infos appear on the globe, it slows a bit (not much, it's not really perceptible unless I focus on the earth)

Anyway, vary very cool card  ;)

This looks nice, P4 3.0 Ghz I would guess that it's somewhere around 20fps?

I don't want to suggest colours for this because my choices are famously bad but parts of it seem dark, the earth is quite difficult to make out on the monitor. Maybe some simple light sourcing on the globe?

@SW+Hezad:

Thanks guys. Suggestions are very appreciated. Think I need
to rework the earthmap-jpg definately. About all other suggestions
I will see - unfortunately I cannot spend too much time on it
anymore.

I will have a search on that "move-table-based fx".
The idea goes like this:
You render your sphere once into a temporary buffer, but instead of storing the final colour from the texture, you store the texture-coordinates.
Now you don't need to draw polygons anymore but just pick the texture-coordinates for each pixel from the precalculated buffer. the "sphere" can be rotated along lattitude/longitude by adding some value to the texture-coordinates.
A "tunnel" is the typical effect to use this method.

performance wise it's just fine here, core 2 duo @ 2.4ghz, gf9500, 4gb ram and vista 32..

a few things i noticed was that if you want it to be more of an international e-card you should consider "Contact" instead of "Kontakt" aswell as fix the missing "P" in  "skyPe" :P (unless "skye" is some new form of online communication im unaware of :)

Ok, added a debug version with FPS counter:

http://www.weltenkonstrukteur.de/debug.html

I set the actual flash movie framerate to 24fps. So it should be around this
value (hopefully).

Thanks a lot for explanation. Will see if I find the time to experiment with that.

Btw. I implemented mouse interaction in the debug version - but somehow I
don't think it worked with this fx - or what do you think ???

Rofl .. thanks a lot for pointing that out. Of course you are right - it should be of course
Skype. I corrected it.
An english version is (realistically seen) not needed I think ;-)

Very nice one Benny!, debug version run at 19 fps here, P4 2.8GHz
I liked mouse interaction too.

Btw, are you sure this globe map is from earth planet ? ;)

25fps here! and stable

AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile
1.61 GHz, 1GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 7300

really nice flashtro! good job
We once had a passion
It all seemed so right
So young and so eager
No end in sight
But now we are prisoners
In our own hearts
Nothing seems real
It's all torn apart

ah cooler ! the earth moving with mouse movements is really, really nice.

I get 23 FPS and ~17 when you contact text is being "written".

Thanks, and yeah. I have to admit, that the earth shapes looks a bit weird
in only 2 colors. But well ...

Oh ok. interesting to see how the framerate drops down when writing some text.
Thanks for feedback-
