Why are some of the people on the cover of that book screaming?
When I picked up "30 Hour BASIC" by Clive Prigmore I had high hopes that I would actually learn BASIC in 30 hours. In the introduction Mr. Prigmore states the three steps that you must master in order to use a microcomputer with confidence:
(i) the BASIC language
(ii) planning good program structures
(iii) using the keyboard
This seemed easy, I'd be using a microcomputer with confidence any day. I learned what a computer was, I learned what BASIC was and I even learned how to remark my statements with the REM statement. This was exciting stuff. Soon I was converting centigrade to Fahrenheit and I even figured out what a string was:
Some examples of strings are:
CAT (a word)
MARGARET THATCHER (a name)
Z9)?27 (a mixture of characters)
ABC 123W (a car registration number)
This was all well and dandy, but after completing 3 chapters of examples and exercises by hand I sent them in to the National Extension College Correspondence Tutor at the address listed but I received no response. This really lowered the rating I would have otherwise given this book from 10/10 to 2/10.
