Worse Programming Book?
« on: January 14, 2009 »
Years ago.....My friends give me a Programming book called You Can do it! - a Beginner`s indroduction to computer programming and to be honest it is worse programming book I ever read for just first chapter!

The code they show is

The IDE they used called quincy.

Code: [Select]
#include "playpen.h"
#include <iostream>

int main(){
               fgw::playpen paper;
               paper.display();
               std:: cout << "press Return to end program.";
               std:: cin.get();
}

if Beginner used this above for their BLOODSHED C++ and run the program.....they will get quite of error such as #include "playpen.h",  fgw::playpen paper; and paper.display(); because in C++  They used this

Code: [Select]
#include <iostream>

using namespace std;

int main()
{
  cout<<"HEY, you, I'm alive! Oh, and Hello World!\n";
  cin.get();
}

 ;)

What the worse Programming book You have read?

I assume the original book came with a disk with those missing libraries on it.

Why are some of the people on the cover of that book screaming?

When I picked up "30 Hour BASIC" by Clive Prigmore I had high hopes that I would actually learn BASIC in 30 hours. In the introduction Mr. Prigmore states the three steps that you must master in order to use a microcomputer with confidence:
(i) the BASIC language
(ii) planning good program structures
(iii) using the keyboard

This seemed easy, I'd be using a microcomputer with confidence any day. I learned what a computer was, I learned what BASIC was and I even learned how to remark my statements with the REM statement. This was exciting stuff. Soon I was converting centigrade to Fahrenheit and I even figured out what a string was:
Quote from: Clive Prigmore
Some examples of strings are:

Code: [Select]
CAT (a word)
MARGARET THATCHER (a name)
Z9)?27 (a mixture of characters)
ABC 123W (a car registration number)

This was all well and dandy, but after completing 3 chapters of examples and exercises by hand I sent them in to the National Extension College Correspondence Tutor at the address listed but I received no response. This really lowered the rating I would have otherwise given this book from 10/10 to 2/10.

Surely you would want to be familiar with a keyboard, then have a good programming structure ready, and THEN start coding.

If I've got it wrong it could explain my lack of skill.

You didn't even need a microprocessor to complete the book/course. Which is the right way of doing things. Makes you get used to using your imagination if you're ever stuck on an island, or in a lift.

You Can do it! - a Beginner`s indroduction to computer programming IS NOT RAW C++!

I did college course for C++ for 2 years way back in 1997 ;)

Several years ago I took a contract to fix a VB program that someone had started but could never get working. It was a fairly straightforward database program running against an Oracle database. I got it up and running in a couple of weeks and was curious about who wrote the program since it had some really odd coding. I was told that the guy who intially programmed it had written several VB books for Microsoft! Go figure.
