TIME CHALLENGE!

Welcome to the TIME Challenge!

Time to code something new!

The earth orbits the sun once every 365.25 days, this span of time is a year, Stone age man walked the earth 13,000 years ago, The earth rotates on its own axis once every 24 hours, comets have orbits of the sun that take many many years.

Light travels at 186,000 miles per second.

The tide comes in and out twice a day, we all have clocks and watches so we can measure time, our lives depend on it.

A bird in the road eating something has to know how long it will take an approaching car to reach it or it will be killed.

Animals need to know what time of year it is so that they can breed at the right time and migrate to a milder climate to escape the winter or to find food.

Will you make something that measures time?
Will you make something that displays time?
Will you make something that shows progression over time?

The choice is yours.

Here are the rules!

  • Your demo must be to do with time.
  • Your demo must display in visual terms (in some way) either:
  • The measurement of time.
  • The current time.
  • The progression of time. (I.E the effect of time on something).
  • You can use any playform that is compatible with windows XP+Vista.
  • You may write something for web browsers as long as it works in IE7 or FF3 (or both!)
  • The following emulators are welcome: Vice, Winuae, Saint, PS2 Yabasic
  • Please give credit if you use ripped sound/gfx, or even better credit the original artist.
  • Please write something new for the challenge, no previously released stuff.
  • Do not use ripped routines. (dlls, libs, fmod, sdl, frameworks etc are fine but say what you used please!).
  • Enter as many times as you like.
  • Entries to be posted in this forum please with the title [TIME] entry name
  • Entries may be posted between NOW and Midnight of [27th March 2009]
  • The winner [S?] will be decided by a poll of forum users

Here are the prizes!

  • 1st Place  - Sig - 20 Karma
  • 2nd Place - Sig - 15 Karma
  • 3rd Place -  Sig - 10 Karma
  • All entries get 1 Karma

Good luck!

I want to thank Benny for the idea for this challenge.

Cheers mate!

Depending on funds there might be a little prize for the winner :)

The clock part of it you mean? :)

I think that Gravity's 1kb clock would have been a worthy entry too :)

My Auntie has a farm.  When the AI man comes round, he's not spruiking the latest technology...But he does have a long turkey baster.

Regarding screen widths - for clarity, my entry will be 1000 pixels wide. I understand many of you will have pixel resolutions exceeding this.

Does anybody think this is too wide though?

It will be programmed in Flash, so it should be scalable, but I'm not sure what effect the scaling will have on the Actionscript controlled parts.

My display is 1024*768, 1000 pixel wide web pages do need a little bit of scrolling but don't really detract too much as long as the page has been properly thought out. I wouldn't think it would bother me too much, dunno about the rest of the peeps though.

I have reduced it to just under 950 pixels. Scaling it seems to cause no problems.

The AI is about complete, I just need to start on the animation and scoring system.

Time is one dimension of our universe, namely the fundamental, measurable magnitude that spans the continuum together with space
I can't think of anything more abstract than "time".
And now you're asking for a visualisation?!
Hard one...

I think time is best shown as change. The best examples of things moving through time show the effects of wear on them. Progression and regression help understand time. Things getting more and more disorderly as a product of entropy. I think the key here is not showing time but rather showing time as a force that acts on a system or object.

Would you count days of the week / months, as a method of passing through time?
In essence a calendar.

Yes, definitely.  Under the current rules you might also get away with Hammer Time.
