MAGNIFICATION CHALLENGE!

MAGNIFICATION CHALLENGE

Welcome to the MAGNIFICATION Challenge!

This has been the first challenge for a while, and after a long time thinking back to my school days I thought of an old experiment we once did, the experiment was called "Brownian Motion" and it was the study of particles through a microscope, in the experiment, smoke particles were placed into a sealed environment and the environment was viewed through a microscope, you could see the smoke particles being punched around by the air molecules.

Here's a video of Brownian Motion that I found on Youtube, this one has a red laser shining through it and it looks quite like a demo effect :)

BROWNIAN MOTION

Some other things I found while looking for suitable subject matter are below:

WHITE BLOOD CELLS

BACTERIA

PROTOZOA

FLAGELLA AND CILIA

You can choose to show anything that you would see through a microscope, or maybe even an everyday item that is greatly magnified., Perhaps you'll make an Amoeba which goes on the hunt for other bacteria, maybe you'll simulate some of the microscopic life that exists under the ocean.

Here are the rules!

 • Your demo must display a scene viewed through a telescope, microscope, magnifying glass or other magnification device.
 • You can use any playform that is compatible with windows XP+Vista.
 • You may write something for web browsers as long as it works in IE7 or FF3 (or both!)
 • The following emulators are welcome: Vice, Winuae, Saint, PS2 Yabasic
 • Please give credit if you use ripped sound/gfx, or even better credit the original artist.
 • Please write something new for the challenge, no previously released stuff.
 • Do not use ripped routines. (dlls, libs, fmod, sdl, frameworks etc are fine but say what you used please!).
 • Two entries per person maximum.
 • Entries to be posted in this forum please with the title [MAGNIFICATION] entry name
 • Entries may be posted between NOW and Midnight of [25th July 2009]
 • The winner [S?] will be decided by a poll of forum users
 • If 1st place is tied there will be a vote-off to decide the winner.
 • Late entries will not be counted for voting.
 • Please PM any correspondance regarding rules to me, don't discuss them here thanks.
 • Please include a screenshot of your entry in your post.
 • Please only post finished work, if you update your entry the final one will be voted on.
 • You may post a video of the entry along with the binaries (useful if you use shaders etc).
 • Your entry may be a realistic image or a charicature of one, for example a cartoon version of microbes would be acceptable, as would a realistic fly-by of a virus under an electron microscope... These are just examples, please do interpret the rules and use your creativity.

Here are the prizes!

 • 1st Place  $25 - Sig - 20 Karma
 • 2nd Place - Sig - 15 Karma
 • 3rd Place -  Sig - 10 Karma
 • All entries get 1 Karma

Good luck!

That sounds fantastic. Really like the comp's theme - and I think you
really put up a cool description about the contest and adding the
video footage is truley inspiring.

Setting the deadline to late July is a good idea - so everybody has got
enough time to enter this challenge.

Let the battle begin  8)

Magnification? The possibilities for a little AI and some probability based quantumn physics are definitely there.

Now to code... :xmas:

I haven't really come up with anything much yet. I tried a couple of things that didn't quite work out. I am still poking around though. :)

Hello,

I just noticed this post, so I will think about this subject.
For the moment I am not sure to produce something ( seems to be really hard subject ; no idea )
But if I can I will send something

Good luck to all other participants ;)
