New Adtro?
« on: July 11, 2009 »
Anyone think it would be a good idea to create a new bbstro to advertise the forum?

It's been a long time since we did anything like that. I'd be up for it. Anyone interested?

Since it was a bbs-tro which brought me here - I think it
would be a good idea to release one. If someone is willing
to do something - it would be great.

Hehe, that is kind of embarrasing now Benny but yes, it is precisely this sort of thing that is needed to bring more people here.

Also I am interested in creating a facebook page for dbf too. Clyde suggested it before, anyone know how to do it?

Sounds like a good idea to me.
What kind of style and size-limit are thinking about?

I could quite possibly contribute an effect.
But as you're most likely heading for a maximum of compatibility, any shader-stuff is probably ruled out?

A facebook page would also interest me. Please keep me up to date
with the progress.

An intro/fx by Hellfire would be fantastic. About shader I do not know.
In the end, since this is a demoscene forum - the demoscene is aware
of having a certain hardware spec to run an production on. But you are
right, Hellfire - for an advertro the more ppl can run it - the better.

Certainly! I hope to get something set up some time this week :)

As Benny said, I think most people who watch demos have a fairly up to date card that can use shaders, even my shitty X1650 can do shadermodel 3.

As for the style of it, since I am lacking in artistic flair I want to be guided!

I am sure that anything you code would be wonderful Hellfire, I'm sure that I speak for everyone here, we'd be totally proud of anything you were to contribute.

I think that whatever it looks like ,we need to get over what this place is all about, namely the challenges, the friendly nature of the place and also the tutorials.

Well, I wasn't intending to do it alone. Maybe a collaboration of forum-members would be nice...

Sorry for misinterpret you here, Hellfire. I did not want to push you into anything ;-)
Yeah, a collaboration of forum members would totally rock of course. You could do
some multi-part scenes where each member contributes a scene or so.

Still, there needs to be one person adding all stuff together and doing some kind of
project managing.

But how could this look like, which language would be chosen, are various members
working on separate effects or are all working on effects for one single screen - like
one is coding the scroller, one the background effect, one a transition effect and one
puts it all togehter ?

We'll definately need a glue coder, I guess that it would need to be written in C++ ?
I am sure I can sort out some music and graphics for it.
I'll even try and get it released at Sundown this year :)

Not necessarily. It'd be my first choice, though.

Well, personally I would like to move forward on this, my C++ skills go about as far as the basic syntax of the language is concerned.
I am keen to wade in and have a go though.

The first thing I will do is get a song and some graphics from some friends and hopefully something can happen from there :)

Looks like it's just me and you Hellfire, I have to be honest with you, I would see this as a great opportunity to try something new... Having said that, I've always had problems with collaberative projects in the past though, they never seemed to get going properly, if it's in C++ I would probably end up annoying you really.

As you can gather with all the work that's gone into the forum I really do want to get something done... Even if it's releasing a few smaller things. I don't have the skill to lead a project like this myself and I'll need some assistance.

Well my C++ skills arent the best in the world but I am up for helping out in some way, even if its just to test ideas :)

Perhaps if we get an idea how the adtro should look we can then get something going. Maybe some mock up layout ideas will help, will have a think while i have my lunch see if anything strikes me  :inspired:

I'd help, but I'm no good at C++ and have little knowledge of 'demos' as opposed to games and the like.
I love semi-colons way too much ^^;

"Demos" are much easier: They just need to look good but don't need to be fun to play ;)

There's also no need to use C++.
You should be using OpenGL or some kind of image-buffer (like TinyPTC does), though.

While looking about for some inspiration I came across this cool 64k invitro from 2007 http://www.intro-inferno.com/production.php?id=3067

It has some oldskool effects running in the different boxes while the 4th area has a text writer of sorts. I thought this might be a cool way to do the intro for here, you could have part of the screen with logo, website address and maybe a little scroller/text writer and the other part have some effects running, maybe a mix of oldskool routines and perhaps something a little more upto date ?

Any one else have any ideas or thoughts on what we can do :)

I will not be able to help either (do not know c++, nor freebasic), but I think that Jon's idea about having an intro that shows both oldschool effects and something more up to date would be a really good idea.
