Atm i think about an idea n concept for a dbf intro as announced by shockwave on the forum.. while thinking about it, i noticed that we dont really have some finished DBF interactive logos / banners available here, right? What about adding and collecting here all DBF logos / banners, so everybody who want to use such a logo / banner in his production, he can use (if the author accpect it). I think this would be nice idea to have some good and known logos people can use... what do you think about?

Well, this is tricky. Of course it would be nice to have some logos we could
show for example for making promotion for this intro or in front of competition
releases. But this should not mean that everyone can release intros in the name
of the forum - because this could imply a danger of course.

Do not know how Shocky/Jim thinks about it ?

Hmmm...

Maybe a bank of logos that can be used if the author wants to use them is ok, I'm kind of nervous of recycling the same logos over and over again though because it's kind of hard to get hold of good graphics.

CK - If you go to Pouet.net and look at their logos you will get an idea of what it is to draw a good one. We've had numerous logo competitions and submissions but they've all ended up mostly a background+random font typed in from Photoshop+one of the filters applied over the top. None of the logos at Pouet are like that, all the letters are hand crafted and themed. I wish we had a fraction of those beautiful logos.

Just a question... if we would have logos... would kind of logos should we have? "DBF+GVY", "DBF Interactive"... ? ^^

The trouble is that we are all programmers, we're not artists.

The thing I really hate about having a logo competition is that someone will always end up having their feelings hurt.

To draw logos of the quality that we need is something that a very, very small percentage of people can do.

I used to be a pixel artist many years ago on the Amiga, if you really try with a logo it should be something that you can spend as long as it takes to perfect, just as you would with your program.

There really arent many people who can do both disciplines successfully.

i dont wanted to start a logo competition... just only possible a collection of some possible logos... nothing more nor less... but i agree, it would not be nice to have a logo used again and again... and that ppl can use it any proberly unserious prod.

It's quite a task of getting enough logos that are good enough mate, that is the problem and in doing so people will get their feeling hurt.

I like the idea of having a bank of graphics to be used but I would not be happy with just any old logo being used in a production for this community when it took 6 or 7 years to get it where it is.

If any good artists are reading, please get in touch.

The important words are good artists not someone who can use photoshop a little bit with some custom fonts and filters... I suspect that there aren't many takers.

I was a much better artist than I was coder in my younger days but I have never been able to translate my skills from back then into pixel art. Of course since then I had my accident and I dont have the same hand control as I had back then.

I agree with shockwave tho, to make really good scene style logo's is an art form and few are ever done by the coders, we are a coding forum so pure artists arent generally on here that much, it's a shame but a difficult thing to change.

Since we have a graphics forum I dont see there's much harm in people having a go at making a logo, but we all need to accept that were likely to make "coder art" and take it as a bit of fun. If your likely to get upset then it's probably best not to post your work

As for having a preference for 3D text, the answer is that I don't care as long as the logo looks amazing, and by that I mean that it has to be al least the qulity of ;

If you can't draw that well, please don't expect it to be considered because invariably it's me who has to say, sorry it's not good enough and I really hate having to do that to people.

Totally agree with Shocky/TinDragon here.

The artist of the demoscene really created their own art style or
category for it. And the standard and quality is very high IMHO.

I think Photoshop and other packages have really made it too easy for people to get effects without really understanding tecnique. It really makes cringe when people use gradients and filters in a feeble attempt to shade.One simply cannot get that 3D sense of depth from using filters. This is because filter shading makes things look fuzzy and puffy on the front while neglecting any perspective. When shading, one needs to really consider the contours of the object. There is no filter than really considers a 2d shape 3d and shades it accordingly..

The main point here is that one really has to invest some hours into their work. Now anyone can make art, but something that appeals to many people is usually very tough to do. Logos are really advertising, this means that one has to consider your audience too. There is really no good or bad artist but when one becomes an artist and advertiser then one is working to satisfy as many people as possible. Honestly the notion of being either an artist OR programmer is nonsensical. The main problem is that both require HUGE amounts of study and the time is not shared easily.

Another problem is that pencil and paper is quite different than mouse and screen. Learning to draw on the computer even for a good traditional media artist is like learning to draw all over again. If art is the goal then study and practice is required, if programming is the goal then study and practice is required. They are not really "opposites" but both are very very time consuming causing the illusion of being opposites.

I think it is still very valid to scan in hand drawn logos and then touch them up and color them in Photoshop. That may be a happy medium.
