+10 Programs -10
« on: December 04, 2009 »
My new PC arrives tomorrow, for a bit of fun I want to make a list of 10 things I should and should not install on it.

Here's what I've come up with.

Things to install:

  • Zero Hour Generals/Shockwave/Hamachi
  • Visualstudio
  • Freebasic
  • Notepad++
  • Ps2yabasic
  • ICQ client
  • AVG
  • Irfanview
  • Filezilla
  • Firefox

---------------

Things not to install:

  • Kaspersky Internet Security. (I've had enough of it!)
  • Norton
  • Mcaffee
  • Windows live messenger
  • Blitz Basic
  • Cobra
  • Fbide
  • Devc
  • Anything by Bits.
  • Lavasoft adaware

I reccomend CCleaner, though others may disagree.

Blitz isn't that bad for your comp is it? I know it makes overly bloated exes, but still...
I love semi-colons way too much ^^;

I don't want Blitz because of the bloat. The only version of that I'd consider is BMAX :)

This is great though I hadn't heard of CCleaner. It looks really good!

@Shockwave: Notepad++ is simply beautiful, they released 5.6.1 just today

why just VisualStudio (full or Express?) not MinGW?

I personally like PSPad. I'll have to check out Notepad++. I haven't seen that one.

@Shockwave:
Ah nice to see you get a new PC... May you tell us a bit about your new system config? ;)
Btw, i saw two programs on your "install" list where i have to say, just take a look to this alternative programs:

# ICQ client -> Better alternative:  pidgin  (www.pidgin.im) OpenSource (ICQ, MSN... all with one nice tool)
# Irfanview -> XnView (very nice tool with a lot of nice editing options, esp save/compress settings)

Tools you should use/must have too:
- TotalCommander
- latest DX version (redis. version)
- latest KLite MegaCodecPack
- WinRar or any alternatice like 7zip
- VLC
- Aimp (great alternative for bloody WinAmp)
..
- hp EliteBook 8540p, 4 GB RAM, Windows 8.1 x64
- Asus P5Q, Intel Q8200, 6 GB DDR2, Radeon 4870, Windows 8.1 x64

Thing with blitz max is that you wont be able to run your code / other peoples help stuff for blitz3d, blitz plus, and the original pc blitz basic as its completely different.

One app i'd install is WinAmp so you can listen to Nectarine :)

There's virtually no need for klite codecs on Windows 7.  It supports mp2,h.264/mp4/avc,divx,xvid etc out of the box.  I really very strongly suggest you don't install it.
The only things you might want to add are an mkv splitter and maybe flac if you use that at all.

Simply because of Visual Assist :)
It requires a commercial version of Visual Studio, though.

I'm a Resharper man myself :)

I've also given up on AVG having used it for 10years.  The latest version has a really annoying nag screen, so I've replaced it with Avast! which seems to be going OK.
