In A Word - Monitors
« on: September 22, 2010 »
I've had my Vision Master Pro 410 monitor for what seems like a life time.

And it's about time to invest into a new one. I wonder if you could recommend to me, some good makers?

I'm not sure on High Definition / LED, as it sounds as if I would maybe need to also update my Nvidia 7600gs graphics card, and wether a geforce9 will fit into my PC / PCI-e. Though I've always wanted a slimmer VDU! Im thinking of somewhere between 20-24 inch.

Cheers!

If you're on a tight budget, nearly all the cheap LCDs are fine.
If you have money to burn, the Dell ones are real nice, bright.
I haven't seen an LED screen yet, but I bet they are excellent.  Still a little pricey.
I have a 20" Viewsonic at home which I've had for 5 or 6 years, it's good, Kez has a 22" AOC, and I have used lots of Dell ones at work.  They are all good, though Kez complains about the colours being not quite right on hers.
All of them still have VGA connectors, most of them also have (digital) DVI or HDMI connectors too.  If you can use DVI or HDMI your picture quality will improve beyond your wildest dreams, though VGA will still usually cut it.

If you have PCI Express (I'm guessing you finally got hold of a new computer, right?) then all the new gfx cards fit, most have DVI and HDMI connectors, with adapters back to VGA.

My previous PC was a Dell. Last August for my birthday my brother gave me a spare PC.

Never thought about looking on Dell for monitors. Cheers. Will have a look and put one on my Christmas list. Most places like dabs.com and  amazon, have acer or samsung.

I'd really like to get my hands on a pny geforce9800gt. i've read they need a very good cooling system and they are pretty big so might not fit into a GatewayGT5082. I don't want to have to upgrade my power unit and fans, as I dont know alot about them, and I don't trust myself enough to do it, if it needs doing. I'd love a geforce9 though.

I'm using a BENQ G-2222 HDL (22" 16:9) screen which uses led backlights and runs in hd.
The leds make it consume half as much energy as a regular screen.
The hd-thing doesn't make much sense on a 22", though. Everything looks rather tiny and the first thing you do is turning the font-size up.
It's a good screen if you don't want to spend much money.

If you have more professional ambitions (and want to spend more money) you can have a look at the HP ZR-24W (24" 16:10) which we're using at work.
