For those who still own an amiga, specifically an A1200 or A600, and have some knowledge with electronics, take a look at those smd capacitors on your board, they might be leaking and they sure can destroy it.

I've followed this tutorial and I have successfully changed all smd capacitors (two were already leaking). This tutorial was made in portuguese language, translation is not good but for those who are familiar with electronics it will be easy just following picture sequence, which are in high quality.

In the mean time I just remove my old 80Mb HD(!) and installed a 4GB CF card using a CF IDE adapter, this is great because I can easily use winuae to transfer files to the amiga, I'm now using classic amiga workbench which works pretty nice.

Well, I'm having some fun it seems :)

thanx RBZ, during the years I almost forgot to check my Amigas for leaking smd capacitors (I manly focused on leaking batteries for RTC/RAM expansions or accelerator boards) .... then I'll take a look at http://youtu.be/CeQLoCf5ddU (ranked 2nd on Revision 2011... IMHO this one deserved 1st place in place of this http://youtu.be/mEkVTF3i7BA...).

Google did a pretty good job of translating this into English :)

It looks like a lot of work, but well worth doing to protect your beloved Amiga for years to come!

rbz, thanks for sharing. Are replacement capacitors hard to find? I have an A1200 that probably needs some attention before it's too late.

Those batteries are the evil!
About those demos, unfortunately I can only watch it on winuae, my A1200 only have 2MB chipmem :(

It's not that much hard work if you have some experience with electronics but you need some patience to clean the board after removing all those capacitors.

Nope, they are all easy to find, I did exactly like in that tutorial and used standard radial capacitors.
If you like your machine, don't hesitate and go replace those little silent bombs :)
