ASCII DEMO COMPETITION PART 1!
« on: July 04, 2006 »
ASCII DEMO COMPETITION PART 1
[/b]

This competition is in 2 parts and it has a different theme from last time, you are again limited. Last time it was by the amount of lines you could use.. This time you are limited by your display!!!

Check this out for inspiration;

http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=5095

That is a very basic but still really cool ASCII demo, you'll see a rotozoom effect made completely out of the character set! Much more complicated things are possible, from metaballs to raytracers, it can all be done in ASCII.
ASCII was chosen as the theme for this challenge as it is non discriminatory towards languages, you can use any language you want!

This challenge is split into two parts, the second part will be revealled after the first part has concluded, for the first part your challenge is;

CODE THE BEST ASCII EFFECT YOU CAN IN THE LANGUAGE OF YOUR CHOICE

RULES
====

No limit on file size or source size.
Include external gfx / music if you like.
Include external libs like fmod, sdl, gfxlib, lockedpixels if you like.
Source must be posted.
No ripped code allowed.
Post as many effects as you like but only one will be judged.
Create a new thread for each effect you post.
You can use a dos screen or a gfx screen as long as the display is rendered from ascii characters.
You have until midnight GMT Sunday 30th July to post your entry.

This will be a comp of two halves as previously stated, a few things on the comp.. I won't be drawn into an anal discussion on the rules but if you have any genuine queries please post them here.

The upload limit has been temporarily increased to 750kb to allow for Blitz exes, please only use this much disk space if you really have to :)

I will judge the first round, the best 50% of the entries will go through to round two, where a new challenge will be set.

The second round will be voted on in a poll of all forum users to pick the overall winner!

The awards are as follows;

+2 Karma +25 Posts for a valid entry into the competition.
+2 Karma +50 Posts for making it through to the second round.
+10 Karma +500 Posts for 1st Place in the second round + custom sig.
+7 Karma +200 Posts for 2nd Place in the second round + custom sig.
+5 Karma +100 Posts for 3rd Place in the second round + custom sig.

I will probably be entering a few little examples myself, I want to point out that my own entries are to be disqualified from judging to be fair to the rest of the board.

Good luck!!!!

I've had a little look into this (never done anything like that before) and might give it a go although I am really busy with something atm so not definite.

Interesting compo. I always wanted to make an ASCII demo but I was puzzled by how should I code my effects so that the proper chars are used for shading, antialiasing, etc. I'd have to search for which proper characters to connect to which values in order to make it good looking. Maybe there are some libs out there, though I don't know if they do this automatically. And I was never into ASCII art even though I'd like to try something. Hopefully there is enough time for the deadline, still I'll have to work on one-two demos (after I finish the GP32 one) during July, though most probably I'll try doing something..

I'll be making some submissions (not for judging).
A couple of changes, the forum will vote on each part with the total being combined at the end to decide the winner.

Wham will draw proper sig graphics this time for the winner and runners up. :)

 ;D Sweet!

I'm all over this one when I get the time... =) ... Sounds like a fun idea, I've a fair share of ASCII stuff in the past, though very few in Intro form.... Count me in..  ;)
