What do you do for your day job?
« on: May 31, 2011 »
Yeah I know that this is a similar thing to post your pic.. I just think it would be interesting because a lot of new people have joined since we last ran this topic :)

I'll start the ball rolling.

I'm a Systems Developer for an insurance company, my job is to automate and improve existing procedures, liase with all the different departments, provide IT help, Impliment real time pricing rules, program letter logic and reports, look after the intranet and I use a combination of CDL (a specialised system for insurance brokers and banks), Visual Basic and Java. The intranet is a joomla implimentation so I get to use some php and html too :)  Been doing that a year and a half, before that I was a van driver and before that I was a partner in a food wholesale/  retail business.

I work two sucky jobs atm. None of them has directly to do with coding/computers. One is in the office of an automatization firm, the other one in retailing.

I just rolled into my dream job, I'm working freelance for a small start-up animation studio comprised of talented, creative and like minded people. They are getting loads of offers and can pick the most interesting projects. I work at home, though they're located quite close so I can pop by whenever needed. We did a sort of trial cooperation project and we're all very happy with the result, we just started work on a new full scale project.

I'm doing the modeling, which I love and I can take on as much work as I like. Really excited about our current and future endevours! :updance:

I have had a number of jobs in the past, but for the last 6 years I have been an IT-Supporter at Vestas Wind Systems which is a large windmill producer. I mostly work with making sure that they other employees computers works. Its not really a dream job or anything and I have no formal IT education, but its something that I know how to do and it puts food on the table and a roof over my head. Actually I am getting a bit sick and tired of it and has been for the last year or so. But there really is no other jobs around these days and since the economy have not improved a lot that situation might not change for a while. I am spending my sparetime trying to get a game done so that I can see if there are any money in the mobile game business. I think that there might be, but it probably all depends on getting luckly with the right game at the right time.

Pixel_Outlaw: Had NO idea you were from Montana. Which part? I'm from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

I currently live and work in Norway for a startup formed from the demoscene group Outracks. We're basically like contractors but for real-time graphics jobs. Got a few in the mix currently and more on the way, and it's been brilliant; exactly the kind of stuff I want to do and the kind of people I want to work with.

I work in the security/defence industry and work from home.  Been doing this for about 7 years now. Did a computer science degree before that with a view to becoming a teacher, but decided I'd had enough of classrooms for a while :)

Before university, I worked as a web developer at an advertising agency in London.  I now live back where I was born in Dover, which is near the coast in the South East of England.  Most of my development work these days is C# based. I do a little bit of Objective C for work too.

I recently set up a company called Binary Magic, which makes iPhone and iPad games.  I do this in my spare time and hope some day to be able to make a living out of this full time. At the moment, the income from this wouldn't even buy me a cheap lunch though ;)

I'm a computer technician in a secondary (high) school.

Loads of the kids think I'm a teacher, even though my name badge clearly has "ICT Technician" written on it.

I also do free-lance computer repair and web design in my local area.

Well as some of you know I dont work at the moment, had a car accident and pretty much been unable to work much since. Last job I did was actually as an ICT tech. for a secondry school part time over the summer. Helped install and setup a new classroom of computers and provided support into the start of the term. Was actually an enjoyable job but sadly they couldnt keep me on and as it happened on the final week I triggered off the injury from the car acident and ended up signed off for 14months. Before the accident I worked in the motor trade selling car, truck and bus parts and then in the paint and refinishing side. Also worked as purchase clerk and accounts clerk at various times.

Now I help babysit my great niece and nephew which is the hardest job I think I ever had  ;D

Cool! I always dreamed of being a Chef one day. What style of food do you specialise in?

I started as a nurse(I am an RN with a BSN degree), then went teaching in a review center where I mainly handle incoming nursing students, some math, a sciences(had some coding jobs on the side too). Then came my health troubles. LOL

Now I manage our farm. ;*)

The one thing I miss when I lived in the city is fast internet and cable(I could not watch the NBA live these days).  :(  (I'm on a 2g GPRS wireless).

Yep, definitely a lot better. In fact after 3 long years, I've started driving our car again(I have to, since going to the farm on foot is a lot harder).  Though driving a non-power steering, 4 gear tin can of a car is hard work on your arms.  ;D

Though is isn't mine, our tin can looks exactly like this:

That's great news Farmer Rel!! :)

Raizor! I'm an all rounder in the kitchen. If I had to choose a few favourite cuisine's, It would be Chinese, Indian and Italian. I do like to make alot of Stroganoff's ( A Popular Russian Dish ). Veggie's have been known to like my Wild Mushroom version. Not particularly hot at Pastry Work, that in it's self is a real art form and you need cold hands! Doesn't mean I can't knock up a mean Desert though!

I have an interest in a lot of things, but I repair loudspeakers for a living
and anything in the cabinet they might be in - including some modelling
and design - all learnt on the job. I just like repairing things, in general.

With this programming, I always liked making things dance around the screen.
No-one wants to see it though - except me and you guys.

Have a Yahappy day.
I don't know what is wrong with the world - but I know how to fix it.
