PHENOMENA CHALLENGE 2011

:sunny: - Welcome to the Phenomena Challenge -   :sunny:

This time the challenge is to take a look at some of the amazing things that occur in our world, choose one of these phenomena and to render your interpretation of it with code and make it look beautiful.

You could classify a lot of natural events as phenomena, from the Morroccan goats that climb the argan trees to eat the fruit, to the beautiful aurora borealis that you can observe in Northern latitudes.  One of the former would lend it's self nicely to a humorous entry perhaps, the second one is more akin to a demo effect.  You choose... You can choose a natural or man made one.

Here are a few ideas to get your creative juices flowing!

Lightning Storm, Crop Circles,Ufos!, Denmarks Black Sun,Meteor Shower, Contrails and cloud formations., Tornado, Light Refraction, Lunar Eclipse

The challenge of course is to choose a phenomena  which would lend it's self nicely to code, then code your effect and make it look awesome.

In your entry - please provide a brief description of the phenomena you've used as an inspiration.

Here are a few examples of natural and man made phenomena in action:

Feel free to choose something else if there's something you think will look really cool!

 Here are the rules.

  • Your Demo must contain at least image phenomenon effect.
  • You can use any platform that is compatible with Windows 7, windows XP & Vista.
  • You may write something for web browsers as long as it works in IE8 or Chrome or FF4 (or all!)
  • If you use flash, please provide a link where people can see your demo. If you are placed in the top 3 your .swf will be added to the site as a .zip file You should attach the .swf in a zip file to your post.
  • Wild entries are allowed and you may use any home computer / console.  Anything that is not windows based should be entered as a Wild.  Therefore you should upload it to youtube and post the video as your entry.  It's cool to post the binaries as well.
  • Please write something new for the challenge, no previously released stuff.
  • Do not use ripped routines. (dlls, libs, fmod, sdl, frameworks etc are fine but say what you used please!).
  • Entries to be posted in this forum please with the title [PHENOMENA] entry name.
  • Entries may be posted between NOW and Midnight of [Saturday 12th November 2011] - UK GMT
  • The winner [S?] will be decided by a poll of forum users
  • If 1st, 2nd or 3rd places are tied there will be a vote-off to decide the winner.
  • Late entries absolutely will not be counted for voting, even if one second over the deadline.
  • Please PM any correspondence regarding rules to me, don't discuss them here such posts will be removed and not answered.
  • Please include a screenshot of your entry in your post.
  • Please only post finished work, if you update your entry the final one will be voted on.
  • After the submission deadline You may NOT post ANY further attachments to final or other versions of your entry ANYWHERE on this forum until voting has closed.
  • You may post a video of the entry along with the binaries (useful if you use shaders or linux etc).  In fact it is advisable that you do this if possible, especially if you use tecnology that not everyone possesses.

lol, runs pretty well in Firefox! ;D

Excellent topic once again Shockwave!
I think I'll  try a few natural disasters, my messy code alone should be a formidable one. ;)

Awesome theme! One of my favorites.

Awesome idea - I didn't see it coming.

Now I have to choose a suitably well known phenomenon which few others will choose to implement.

Yep, truly a nice idea for a challenge. I'll try to enter something too. Even with my limited timeframe this time. Maybe I'll take a shot at the Windows bluescreen phenomena. Shouldn't be too hard to implement this...  ;D

I've got an idea - I just need to make some adjustments to it, but the physics is in place.

I have just built myself a new PC and currently dont have any coding apps installed, this seems like a good reason to look into getting them on here, so I will see if I can make something for this challenge, but I cant promise anything as RL is very busy atm. Look forward to seeing what other make tho, even if I fail myself :)

Is there a limit to the number of entries in this competition? I've read through the rules twice, but I may have missed it.

If you have multiple entries, I'd just submit the best one, otherwise you'll risk cannibalisng your votes. Just a thought.
