[REMAKES] Castlemaster - Paranoimia
« on: September 23, 2008 »
Here's my first offering, I always loved this intro even though it's ugly, the music lifts it up;

Original Code : ?
Gfx : Alan
Music: Jesper Kydd

You will not be able to vote for this in the competition, but in the interests of the rules I will post everything I remake in the competition time span in the challenges thread :)  There are likely to be quite a lot of them.

In case you're using an xm-player to play the mod-file, you probably forgot to reassign panning (seems to play mono).

Cool tune and nicely done. Don't know the original though.
However, copperbared scrolly looks nice!

Original was only used on Castle Master as far as I know, probably because it's so damned ugly :)

Cheers Hellfire, I found what I had done wrong. It was a badly converted module, I'll fix the Castlemaster intro before the end of the challenge, for now I am woring on that Classic one :)

Here's a preview for people who like really nasty cracktro tunes by Dezecrator... And no, it's not the tune you're thinking!

Just a sine scroll, song and stars for now.
Trainer menu and vectors still to do.

The original cracktro was bad, my remake is virtually identical to it, apart from the sound which I must fix! I even emulated the shit starfield algorithm that seems to use a Polar routine rather than a proper 3D algorithm and also bunches stars up in a corrupted circular pattern at the beginning..

Get yourself a copy of Winuae and search for the binaries if it's something that interests you :) Once you have a few years under your belt you'll see how challenging it is to remake these things accurately... Because of course if you put a few pixels in the wrong place there will be someone who'll be able to tell you you got it wrong!

That's quite an unknown one, the sound is mellow and the copper gradients are nice, especially the blue background, I really like it too.

The remake is actually a little bit botched though ;)
I fixed one bug that was in the original and added a new one of my own!

Strictly speaking I should have emulated the bug with the scroller (in the original the reflection came out of the water and intersected the scroll coming down), also I coded the scroll routine in the wrong way and missed one of the effects in the intro.

I'll have to re-code it some time in the future really.

Nice to see that you have the dedication to remake demos you have deemed crappy. I suppose to some extent the "bad" demos/intros are just as valid as the good ones. They all a part of the demo spirit. Good job. ;)

Nice to see that you have the dedication to remake demos you have deemed crappy. I suppose to some extent the "bad" demos/intros are just as valid as the good ones.

To me, seeing these old little gems creates memories of my teenage years. Back to the times when I never had any cares, I just went to college, went drinking with my friends, but secretly and really indulged in my real favourite passtime.

It's hard to seperate what I liked about those years, but they were all centered around the Amiga.

I had over a hundred contacts when I was at my peak, the postman used to deliver up to 10 jiffy bags a day, people would be sending me games and demos from Europe, I'd often have games before they were even in the shops and I never played any of them.

People used to write into magazines saying that piracy was bad because they didn't even play the games... I bought the games I wanted to play.

I bouyght Carrier Command, Captive, Frontier, Powermonger.. So what was the point of trading those games?

It was seeing what group won the race to crack the game first and those intros.

I used to watch them for hours, I still watch them for hours. I had my favourites, I even had some that were not so good.. Some games had really great cracktros on them but were totally bad games but I kept those games anyway..

Castlemaster was a crappy 3D game, I loaded it up once, I loaded this cracktro 1000's of times. The cracktro is shit.

It needs a great logo by Angeldawn or Havoc or Krest, It needs a better font, something in 8 colours with intricate lettering.

There should be a nice copperlist gradient on the screen, very subtle, behind the stars.

The only things that are right about this intro are the amazing music and the pace of the bounce of that logo, but believe me I have watched this intro so many times, it's etched into my brain, it's part of my life and I love it in a nostalgic way.. The music is still something I can listen to for a few hours before I have to turn it off.

They all have to be converted to preserve the past for all time and I'll do my best to convert as many of them as I can, as faithfully as I can. :)

I feel kind of bad for a lot of people who are too young to remember what the scene used to be like in the early 90's and late 80's. It was certainly something different. Nowadays everything is at your fingertips and every lamer has a voice.. Back then people worked hard to be in the best groups.

When you went to a party, you'd have lots of people to talk to because you probably swapped with dozens of people.. I don't know, It just felt so much more exclusive and underground back then. It's still great now, there are so many fantastic people, lots of them are on this forum, but these intros take me back 15-20 years you know?

I know what you mean!!! Damn-it!  i began my journey into the scene with C64

I had over a hundred contacts when I was at my peak, the postman used to deliver up to 10 jiffy bags a day, people would be sending me games and demos from Europe, I'd often have games before they were even in the shops and I never played any of them.

You're so DAMN right! :P

I feel kind of bad for a lot of people who are too young to remember what the scene used to be like in the early 90's and late 80's. It was certainly something different. Nowadays everything is at your fingertips and every lamer has a voice.. Back then people worked hard to be in the best groups.

Back in the days there was a very competitive feeling, snail-mail was the ONLY cheap way to tranfer games/intros/demos/mags between Europe, USA, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia.. Traders/Couriers were kind of heroes, spreading the "word" all over the place and everywhere in the world they have had the ability to reach... Elite groups ran BBS's you simply didn't had access to until you have proven to be elite yourself...

Nowadays everything is at your fingertips and every lamer has a voice..

Lames always had the opportunity to speak... but they needed to face the consequences  :bfuck2: ...

Back then people worked hard to be in the best groups.

... and most of them needed to work harder to being able to REMAIN into the Elite Groups...

I don't know, It just felt so much more exclusive and underground back then.

these days there were just a few people who have access to ***GOOD*** computers ( :updance: C64 :updance: , Amiga :buddies: , and so on)... most of those ppl just played games so just 1 out ot 10 started to code, and only few of those who learnt to code became masters in assembler coding...
There were 64kb... less than 1MHz... and crappy tools... but all computers had the same hardware....today we have GHz, HT/Dual/Quad-CoreCPU's, GPU's, Giga/Tera-bytes, Different Vendor Chipsets, Different Integrators HW-Customization... but very Powerful IDE's... Everything's different... the feeling is different... all "machines" ARE different each other...
In the good ol'days skills grew day-by-day, month-by-month... year after year... but actually you hardly start with VGA mode-X programming... there is no REAL (please don't misunderstand) deal in learning that kind of tricks unless you really want for the sake of learning it...

Please don't shoot me! :-) my english needs a lot of improvement! Hope you can figure out what I ***really*** mean and not only what my (erroneous) words say...

It's still great now, there are so many fantastic people, (...) , but these intros take me back 15-20 years you know?

ABSOLUTELY!!!

To me Shocky posts sounds like POETRY... that kind of thing i'm really missing from today's scene/sceners.

Traders/Couriers were kind of heroes, spreading the "word" all over the place and everywhere in the world they have had the ability to reach... Elite groups ran BBS's you simply didn't had access to until you have proven to be elite yourself...

People used to make articles on diskmags that bbs's were killing friendship and swapping in the scene, I didn't think that it was at the time, I just felt that there was a division happening but I was wrong. The internet changed everything even more... There really were some high powered swappers like you say.. One guy stands out in my mind, Parasite/Lsd... He got busted by FAST. Anyway, I swapped with him for a couple of years, we never wrote a letter to each other more than 10 words long!
It was just "thanks for the sending... Send again soon!!"
And of course, we'd wipe the glue off the stamps, stick a new label on the jiffy bag and away to go..

There were guys who had seriousl x-copy rigs set up with 2 external drives and a lot of extra memory so that they could memcopy with xcopy.. Load the whole disk into ram and then write 3 disks at a time... These guys would burn disk drives out like crazy.

This was all part of it too.... Those cracktros... The swapping, the bbs adverts, phreaking the phones... You and me, Moroboshisan, maybe there are 20 or 30 more here that remember what it was like back then..

And it was going to the parties too.. There were always parties here in the UK. Some of them had unreliable power sources when you had dozens of freaks in the hall all plugging the computers in. The mail trading built really good friendships.

It's not like that these days... There are a lot of people in the scene who live off the reputation they gained for the things they did long ago. These guys are generally ok, but some of them are actually quite destructive.

Your message is both eloquent and well understood by me.

These remakes are for guys who didn't see what we saw...

And mostly for guys like you.

35 here... and gettin' older..  :telloff:

Parasite/Lsd... He got busted by FAST.
was it '90 or so, isn't it? ... that's a long trip into the memory lane...

(...)we never wrote a letter to each other more than 10 words long!
most of the time we used predefined contact sheets that needed just some crosses here and there... hehehe... no time to write that much!!!! :-)

And of course, we'd wipe the glue off the stamps, stick a new label on the jiffy bag and away to go..
::) ::) ::) YEAH!!!...

This was all part of it too.... Those cracktros... The swapping, the bbs adverts, phreaking the phones... You and me, Moroboshisan, maybe there are 20 or 30 more here that remember what it was like back then..
...All those "MeZZy" to read/write with noters... Everything had a different "taste"... I still use my C64, my Amiga500 or A1200... just to smell that feeling... the heavy "Click" of C64 (crappy) keyboard have no rivals (PHEW!!!!) today!  ;D

And it was going to the parties too.. There were always parties here in the UK. Some of them had unreliable power sources when you had dozens of freaks in the hall all plugging the computers in. The mail trading built really good friendships.
unfortunately I didn't had the opportunity to attend scene events back then... that's one of my greatest regret

There are a lot of people in the scene who live off the reputation they gained for the things they did long ago. These guys are generally ok, but some of them are actually quite destructive.
they're still living THEIR ELITE STATUS... and maybe they will never put that "ELITE" aside... actually I still respect those guys even if they are quite irritant sometimes...

Guys in G*P, Action, Crest, Origo, FLT, Legend, Chaos, Ikari, TRSI, Talent, S!P, Bonzai, Dominators, Hitmen, Skid Row, Savage, Vision, Pepsi, R101, Sanity, Raizing, F4CG, ICS, Future Crew, Hybrid, Scoopex, Paradox, Prestige,... just to name a few... I still watch it's Intros, Demos and Mega-Demos on the real hardware since emulators don't have the same feeling...

That's it... (for now), Cheers to all the OldSch00l-ers out there.

L8er!
