Hi, I love old retro-style demos. Stutterfree-Scrolling, rasterbars, e.g.
My retro-PC has a P2-celeron and dx6.1 and a voodoo3.
Perhaps someone has some old stuff (before 2000) that will work
with my machine.

Thx!

Hi,

You probably won't find anything that old here, this forum was created around 2005, which means machines with Pentium4 or amd K6/7,  Directx9/Opengl 2.0 hardware compatible.

Take a look on this site:
http://hardcode.untergrund.net/
You can download a huge collection of intros to test on your machine.

I'm still running my old Celeron 450MHz but I'm only using it for DOS demos.
Mainly because the mainboard still has an ISA slot to hold my Gravis Ultrasound.
Maybe that's an option, too.

I guess the Voodoo3 still has the 256x256 pixel texture size limitation?
That will probably rule out most accelerated demos...

Cool my machine is documented here: http://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=43575

It runs lots of old Dos-Software, sometimes native dos-software work under win98s-dos-window but not under plain dos anymore, because the machine is quite fast :) (TP-Bug)

I have chosen the PII, because it can run lots of old dos-software quite well, but also has the power for entry 3D Gaming with 3dfx-glide under win9x.
Some (old) emulators run also quite well. For me right now the PII is by far the best choice.

I expected some retro-demos to work with it, but there are only a view demos with retro-effects available (=demos with old effects from the 16bit home-computer area) I do not need 3d-stuff with low-quality textures/dithering, chrispy sharp colorful und stutterfree 2d stuff is recommended (rasterbars, scrollers, etc.)

What a pity that these retro-demos are not available (as far as I could check the image out, thy are not included either)
https://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=9016
https://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=8410
https://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=61716
https://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=61712

Then I found out that some people had started to convert the old homepcomputerdemos/intros/cracktros (Atari/Amiga) to the PC.
But then I recongnized that these Demos which required an 68k below 10 Mhz now do not run with a machine
that has 400Mhz, they require a machines with >1Ghz and an OS/DX Version much higher then my retro-PC has.

I do not know anything about programming, but I think they use special features of "newer" dx-versions and
some other "middleware" that require so much horsepower, but that's really sad.

my daily machine is a 27" mac (email/internet), but most of the time I spend with the retro-pc.

Greetings
Doc

There is a tool called "PatchCRT" which fixes this bug (a problem in the Borland runtime lib).
To make this work for demos (and especially intros) you usually have to uncompress the exe first (using "unp").
The bug does not appear when I downclock my Celeron to 200MHz.

On Windows a lot of demos were using DirectX8 (because the API got much nicer).
And I'm pretty sure you can install DX8 under Win98.

your are right, I can install dx8, but does not mean that most things work. my v3-diver is still dx61 optimized, there is a version for dx7 but that
has compatibilty-issues in older games. right now the best combination is the dx61-v3 driver with installed dx61a on win98se.

so that is the given limitation right now.

i am currently checking out the archive posted above. more then 90% do not start or produce a freeze, but some cool stuff is included. i'll have to check out the hole archive.
I knew that the TP-Bug can be patched (sometimes) but I did not get it patched with "crystal dreams2". Currently it workes fine with "moslo", crystal dreams1 did
not work either, it has problems with the audio-routine (the sb-fixed version does not work either).

the PC lacks of oldschool demos with retro-effects. I have seen thousands of demos with 3d effects and blurry textures und stuttering animations but I have not seen
scene-stuff with high quality pixelart and colorful stutterfree scrollers/ratserbars for years.

possibly turns out to be so cool like the special version of "JST" that provided AmigaDisk-Games running from HD without newer Kickstart (above 1.3) and/or other tools like "whdload"

If it is possible to get some old Intros/Demos get up and running smoothly on my machine would be VERY NICE.
I really appreciate this.  Thank you for your time/work on this !!!

it works (without stencil) with my celeron dx6.1 and it is WOW! not alaway smooth, but by far the best retro-stuff
I have watched on my machine. GREAT!  :updance:

Just found my old Voodoo3 on the attic this weekend.
I'll give it a test drive in the next days. Hope it still works.
Also have to dig out Win9x and compatible devtools (probably VC6)...

cool, afaik the voodoo3 can do glide, d3d and opengl, but only in 16Bit!!
i think a lot of stuff will work, if you prevent the program from changing directly to 32bit colordepth!

I will start to code using FreeBasic... I surely need help for that....

my targets:

1. Music-Subsystem AHX/THX (because I like the Music-Style)
2. The Music itself is ripped...so only for my usage because of copyrights :(
3. Rasterbars, Starfields, Scrollers...Colorfull und stutterfree (the code-snippes are also ripped, because I don't have any clue how to code these things)
4. Resolution: 1024x768@16Bit Color
5. ....

Frist I will go for try and error with existing-stuff.

Hi,

Have you tried running "tinyptc" library prods on your machine?

Tinyptc uses directdraw, and I believe it should work for you.

You can find a lot of prods and source code on this forum, like this one:
http://www.dbfinteractive.com/forum/index.php?topic=5220.0

I've attached one example here for you to test, it was made by Shockwave.

The bad news are that my dos machine stopped working.
So unfortunately no progress until I find a reasonable replacement.
Ebay people are asking funny prices for their pentiums these days...

Please give me your address, and I will send you an Voodoo3 agp.
Would be very nice to have some DX61 DemoScene-Intro-Remakes that work with an oldskool PII/Celeron below 500Mhz :)

*****
Sorry, You need a Pentium/II, no Voodoo3 ?
What Do you need, only a board P1 P2 ? I have about 50 Boards, so that should not be a Problem.
I will send you what you need. Perhaps a PII- LX Board equipped with a Voodoo3 and a PII/300 Celeron 400 matches my machine :)
